Port Blair, Feb 02: Soil health is very important to sustain the crop production. Assessment of its condition and suitable remedial action is essential to improve the crop production in the islands. Under the National Soil Health Card programme ICAR-KVKK has conducted awareness cum soil health card distribution to the farmers of N & M Andaman on 31st Jan 2018. Soil health cards were distributed at Swadesh Nagar, in the presence of Pradhan, Swadesh Nagar, Mr. Jayant Nag and at Hari Nagar in the presence of Pradhan, Hari Nagar, Mr. Uttam Kumar Mondal. Speaking on the occasion, Dr.A.Velumurugan, Principal Scientist, NRM Division, CIARI, Port Blair explained in detail about the importance of soil health and ways to sustain it. He also appraised the gathering about soil test results interpretation card and its practical application in the field for maintaining soil fertility. Dr. B.L. Kasinath, Sr. Scientist and Head, KVK,N & M Andaman requested the farmers to use nutrients judiciously on their farms as per the recommendations in the card which will reduce the cost of production and increase the output and income of the farmers. On the occasion both the village Pradhans urged the farmers to make use of the information on soil health and appreciated the efforts made by KVK-CIARI. A total of 500 farmers have been registered and 50 farmers received their health cards on the occasion. In the programme SMS of KVK Mr. B.L.Meena, Dr.Poojakapoor, Dr.Shardul Vikram lal and Er.Manoj Kumar explained the usage and significance of Soil Health Card. The training was organized under the guidance of Dr. B. L. Kasinath, Sr. Scientist & Head, KVK, N & M Andaman and under the supervision of Dr. A.Kundu, Director, CIARI, Port Blair.
