Field day on High Yielding Varieties of Pulses for Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Port Blair, Feb 11: Field day under ICAR-Seed project on HYVs of green gram (CIARI Mung 1, CIARI Mung 3, CIARI Mung 4 and CIARI Mung 5) and black gram (CIARI Urd 1 and CIARI Urd 2) developed by the Institute was organised at ICAR-CIARI, Garacharma on 10th February, 2021 by Division of Field Crop Improvement and Protection (FCIP) in collaboration with KVK, Sippighat, Port Blair.

At the outset, Dr. K. Venkatesan, Scientist welcomed and appraised about performance of pulses varieties developed by CIARI for cultivation in rice fallow lands during Rabi season for getting better yield and remuneration. The importance of pulse cultivation in Islands and its role to meet the protein need & enhance the health of the soil was emphasised by Dr. SK Zamir Ahmed, Principal Scientist & I/c Social Science Section. Dr. PK Singh, PS and Head (I/c), Division of FCIP briefed about package of practices and proper time & method of harvesting green gram and black gram. Dr. N Bommayasamy, SMS briefed about importance of bio-formulation in pulse cultivations.

Earlier the farmers representing 14 clusters of villages of South Andaman were taken around the crops in the field and were asked to give their feedback. They expressed happiness on performance of pulses varieties in the field. This program ended with vote of thanks by Shri Shyam Sundar Rao. A total of 71 farmers (9 Male and 62 Female) participated and benefited. This program was conducted under over all leadership of The Director, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair .
