International Women’s Day Celebration in Andaman

Port Blair, Mar 07: Along with the rest of the world these Islands will also be celebrating the International Women’s Day on 8th of March 2018. It commemorates the movement for women’s right. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is “Time is Now : Rural and Urban activists transforming women’s lives”. This year, International Women’s Day comes on the heels of unprecedented global movement for women’s right, equality and justice. Sexual harassment, violence and discrimination against women has captured headlines and public discourse, propelled by a rising determination for change. People around the world are mobilizing for a future that is more equal. International Women’s Day 2018 is an opportunity to transform this momentum into action, to empower women in all settings, rural and urban and celebrate the activists who are working relentlessly to claim women’s right and realise their full potential.
This year the main function of the International Women’s Day in these Islands will be celebrated on 31st March, 2018 clubbed with the Government of India scheme of “Beti Bachao – Beti Padhao” which will be implemented by the Social Welfare Board. Sanitary pad vending machine and incinerators for safe disposal of sanitary pads will be installed at various Schools in Nicobar Islands. A daylong programme will be conducted for working mothers to help them understand financial management. A seminar will also be conducted for school dropouts on skill development. The programme will conclude with a valedictory function encouraging women to celebrate every day as women’s day and mainly focus on Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. The Board will also involve a Bollywood celebrity.
The newly developed prototype by Nicobari girls on coconut shell and their signature handicraft Nicobari mat will be launched on this occasion. Also 2000 packets of sanitary pads will be distributed free of cost under CSR by Johnson & Johnson Ltd. Women from various institutions and fathers who encourage girl child to achieve success will be felicitated on this occasion.
Under the “Beti Bachao – Beti Padhao” Scheme Skill Development Training will be imparted to adolescent girls and women by experts to promote traditional craft, coconut shell handicraft, advance designing of Nicobari Mat and apparels and develop marketing linkages, etc. About 400 Nicobari women will be trained in various fields in 20 different sessions.

Each women should understand their importance and should have the courage to build in their efforts for their own progress,” a release from A & N Social Welfare Board said here today.
