Lieutenant Governor visits to Havelock: Directs concerned departments to resolve public problem on priority

Port Blair, May 15: The Lieutenant Governor, Admiral D K Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.) arrived at Havelock on a two-day visit to the Island. On arrival, the Lt. Governor took a recce of the Island’s outer periphery on board M.V Rajhans to locate and identify suitable place for seaplane landing and alternate jetty.

The Lieutenant Governor also interacted with the PRI members and the general public at Dolphin Resort where various issues pertaining to the people of the Island were discussed. During the meeting, PRI representatives raised a host of issues pertaining to the people of Havelock. Notable among them includes improving connectivity, installation of Ultrasound machine and digital X-ray machine at PHC Havelock, ensuring proper distribution of LPG, deploying rescue boats at Radhanagar Beach with well equipped life guards etc.

The Lieutenant Governor informed the gathering that BSNL will be enhancing the data capacity from 1.3 GBPS to 2.7 GBPS by the year end. He called upon all the PRI representatives to enforce rain harvesting for all the houses as done by PBMC. On the demand regarding life guards and fisheries, the Lt. Governor informed that the same will be examined by the concerned departments.

Further, issues like new electric connection without NOC, shortage of staff vehicles, electric poles in the Electricity Department and issuing permission to private operators to operate ATV, horse riding and Para-Sailing in Havelock Island.

The Deputy Commissioner South Andaman clarified that there is no legal requirement of obtaining NOC from co-tenants from issuing new electric connection. The electric connection can only be refused if there is court order to the effect.

On the issue of allowing private operators to operate ATV, Horse riding, parasailing, the Lt. Governor informed that the Tourism Department will be directed to look into the proposal.

Other issues raised during the meeting included improvement of roads, restarting Coral Queen services at Havelock Island for 04 days in a week, additional trip from Havelock Island & Neil Island to cater to the public demand during summer holidays, plying of one vehicle ferry in Havelock sector in a month and halting of boats coming to Havelock island at night so that early morning trip to Port Blair can be arranged for public.

The Lieutenant Governor directed the Executive Engineer, Electricity Department to visit Havelock Island to resolve the issue of Electricity Department along with PRIs & general public. He further directed for simplifying the process for obtaining new electric connections and would be mandated in the Island on a fortnightly basis.

He also stated that a comprehensive view for the shipping services shall be taken after discussion with the department. Veterinary Department was directed to increase the supply of chicks to the Island.
