Port Blair, March 11: The Lt. Governor, A&N Islands, Admiral DK Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, VSM, NM (Retd), led the Islanders in paying rich tributes to the heroes of First War of Independence yesterday.
This day (Mar 10) commemorates the arrival of the First Batch of Freedom Fighters of 1857 to these Islands. At a solemn function held at the Chatham Memorial at Chatham Island this morning, the Lt. Governor laid wreath at the memorial as a mark of respect to the Freedom Fighters.
Floral tributes were also offered by the Chief Secretary A&N Administration, Mr. Anindo Majumdar, DGP, A&N Police, Smti. Nuzhat Hassan, Secretary to LG, Dr. A.K Singla, Principal Secretary, A&N Administration, Mr. SCL Das, other senior officers of the Administration besides old inhabitants of these Islands, members of the Local Born Association and general public at the Memorial.
A two minutes’ silence was also observed as a mark of respect to those freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the cause of the nation.
