Training Imparted to Teachers of Wimberlygunj Educational Zone on School Safety

Port Blair, Sept 12: To enhance the capacity building of teachers towards disasters, a one day training workshop for teachers of Wimberlygunj Educational Zone under National School Safety Programme (NSSP) was conducted in the Auditorium of Govt. Senior Secondary School, Wimberlygunj on 11th September, 2018 by the Directorate of Disaster Management in coordination with Directorate of Education, A & N Administration.
Mr. Suresh Kumar, Deputy Education Officer, Wimberlygunj, Chief Guest on the occasion has emphasized on disaster Preparedness, Prevention and Mitigation at school level. Since the children are more vulnerable in any catastrophe, hence high priority should be given to school safety. He further urged to teachers for updating school DM Plans and its implementation in their respective schools. Mr. V.T. Reddy, Principal, GSSS, Wimberlygunj also provided valuable inputs on disaster management in schools of the Islands Territory.
Mr. Gyan Singh, Asst. Director (Log.), DDM welcomed the gathering and briefed the present vulnerability profile, preparedness and response mechanism of A&N Islands and also Administration’s mitigation efforts to enhance the capacity building at all level for managing any eventuality. The past incidences of school catastrophes which led to the introduction of an exclusive school safety programme by the Govt. of India across the country and in Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Dr. Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director (Education) highlighted the role of Disaster Management and importance of school safety to be implemented in all schools of A&N Islands and their responsibilities towards making school safer. He further emphasized on implementation of School Safety Policy of Govt. of India in each school of this Territory.
Mr. Deen Mohammed, Safety Officer, DDM had elaborated the functions of State Emergency Operation Centre, contact details, communication system, and its alert & warning messages alongwith advices sending to the General public during any emergency and as safety measures. He also said how to prepare Disaster Management Kit in Home as well as Schools.
In the post lunch session, Mr. Sanjiv Kumar, SI (NDRF) elaborated the role and responsibilities of NDRF and subsequently demonstrated the life-saving skills and first aid techniques. Mr. Abdul Rasheed, ASI, A&N Police Fire Service, Bambooflat explained in detail on basic fire fighting and also taught how to handle different fire extinguishers.
Mr. Janik Ram, Asst. Director (Admn.), DDM urged to teachers for regular updation of School Disaster Management Plans and review the same annually which could be helpful for schools to respond any disaster. Dr. Vazeem Iqbal, Consultant, DDM explained various steps and methods for conducting mock drills at school levels for testing of disaster preparedness of school.
