Port Blair, Jan 10: ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute organized one day training programme on “Prospects of organic cultivation of tuber crops in Middle & North Andaman district” under AICRP on Tuber Crops at Swadesh Nagar Gram Panchayat on 09/01/18 in collaboration with KVK, Nimbudera and Department of Agriculture, Mayabunder zone under the supervision and guidance of Dr. A. Kundu, Director, CIARI, Port Blair.
The training was inaugurated by Shri Jayanta Nagin, Pradhan, Swadesh Nagar in presence of PRI members and others. In his inaugural speech, he expressed his happiness about the programme and urged the farmers to adopt tuber crops as intercrops in the plantation based cropping systems for enhancing farm income for better livelihood options.
Dr. B. A. Jerard, Head, Division of Horticulture & Forestry highlighted the importance of tropical tuber crops in food security in Island ecosystem while Smti. Rajeshree Prakash, Assistant Director, Agriculture Department stressed upon the promotion of product diversification in tuber crops for higher profits. Dr. B.L. Kasinath, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, Nimbudera has enumerated the need for strengthening the market oriented production of crops and linking with Farmer Producer companies for enhanced profitability. Dr. V. Damodaran, ACTO and course coordinator has elaborated the over view of the training programme and highlighted the role of tuber crops in plantation based cropping systems.
A total of 67 farmers and youths were benefitted on the potential of tuber crops suitable for the region, improved varieties, use of quality planting material, organic production techniques, post harvest management, economics of production and value addition by experts from CIARI, Port Blair and KVK, Nimbudera.
