Banned tobacco products seized by Food Safety Officials

Port Blair, Nov 16: As part of surprise inspection by two teams of Food Safety officials constituted exclusively to search contraband products with the assistance of Executive Magistrates made surprise visits to various parts of Municipal area to check the sale of tobacco and/or nicotine products.

The inspection team led by Shri A. Khalid, Food Safety Officer, assisted by Shri. Tahseen Ali, Smt. S. Nisha and Shri. Abdul Shahid, Food Safety Officers on thorough search on 05/11/2016 have found that in the godown premise owned by M/s KS Kumaran & Son’s situated at Babulane, Port Blair had a stock of 42 cartoons Zen Mazza 55 brand tobacco products each cartoon containing 200 packets containing approx. 8400 tins of valuing to Rs.4,83,000/- in the market.

The said contraband tobacco was seized and kept under the possession of the FBO by executing surety bonds.

The Food Business Operator (FBO) have violated by keeping the banned tobacco products in his custody under Food Safety Act’2006. Necessary approval for adjudication in the matter have been obtained and the FBO is being adjudicated u/s 26(2)(iv) and 27(2) (e) which is punishable u/s 55 and 58 of FSS Act’2006 in the Additional District Magistrate Court.

Meanwhile in the Court of Additional District Magistrate one more FBO of M/s Samuel Store, Pathergudda have been adjudicated for storing contraband products and was imposed and realized a fine of Rs.2500/- under relevant section of Food Safety Act’2006.

Further all the food business operators are hereby warned not to stock, sale or distribute contraband products under ban throughout the A&N Islands and if seized will be booked under relevant Rules under FSS Act.
