Mayabunder, Apr 26: The Directorate of Disaster Management in coordination with the District Administration, North & Middle Andaman has conducted a Mock Drill Exercises on Disaster Preparedness on Earthquake and Tsunami on 25th April, 2017 considering the vulnerability towards various disasters in this Island and to enhance the capacity to tackle such type of disasters by involving all line departments, stakeholders, Panchayati Raj Institutions, local community and 38 Schools under Mayabunder Zone as well as Indian Coast Guard.
As per the scenario already planned, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) Port Blair triggered and issued warnings of earthquake that occurred at Bay of Bengal at 10.00 AM, Mw 8.0 Richter scale with 10 Kms epicenter Lat: 06.0* N Log: 95.5* E in the region Bay of Bengal followed by Tsunami at Mayabunder and at 10.40 AM. by fax, SMS, Telephone etc. All line departments, Gram Panchayat, Mayabunder, Pokkadera and Rampur, Community, Coast Guard including all 38 Schools under Mayabunder Zone have been participated.
The ZillaParishad Community Hall has been established as identified as Relief Shelter for evacuation of affected peoples. The Deputy Commissioner/Incident Commander has visited the affected sites along with all HoDs.
Later, a debriefing meeting was also held at 03.00 PM at Conference Hall of ZillaParishad, Mayabunder wherein a detailed discussion was held on lesson learnt between all the stakeholders. Director, Disaster Management has expressed to extend all possible cooperation from Directorate of Disaster Management. Shri. AravaGopi Krishna, IAS, Deputy Commissioner/Incident Commander, in his concluding remarks congratulated all the line departments/ stakeholders & PRIs for success of the mock exercise and urged all the participants to improve their Response mechanism further for tackling any emergencies, crisis and disasters in future.
