Port Blair, Feb 12: ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute conducted an awareness programme on “Potential of Fishery Wastes for By-product Development” at Junglighat fish landing centre on 12thFebruary, 2021. The programme was organized to sensitize the fisherfolk regarding the potential of fishery wastes in processing and by-product development. Various by-products which can be prepared out of the fish wastes such as fish meal, fish silage, fish oil, etc. were explained to the fisherfolk by the scientists of Division of Fisheries Science, ICAR-CIARI. The Officials from Department of Fisheries, Andaman and Nicobar Administration explained about the PMMSY scheme and its role for the benefit of fishermen community. The queries raised by the fisherfolk participants were addressed by the experts and also provided the suggestions regarding waste management and its utilization. A total of 27 fisherfolk from Junglighat have participated in the programme. The programme was organized under the NABARD funded project entitled, “Sustainable utilization of fish wastes for by-product development – an initiative for entrepreneurship development in the Island” by Mrs. Sreepriya Prakasan, Ms. Deepitha, R.P., Dr. R. Kiruba Sankar, Dr. Gladston Y, Mrs. Ajina S. M, Dr. K. Saravanan and Dr. J. Praveenraj.
