Port Blair, Mar 28: Three days training programme on “Improved techniques of horticulture for livelihood security of Nicobari tribals of Harminder Bay and Homestead farming were conducted by ICAR-CIARI under ST component and NASI project during 23rd – 25th March, 2021 with Mrs. captain of Harminder Bay.
In this training programme the various technologies of horticulture like kitchen gardening of vegetables, homestead cultivation of papaya, banana, marigold and pineapple were elaborated to the trainees by Dr. V. Baskaran, Principal scientist and Co-ordinator of training in which 52 trainees of Nicobari community attended programme.
Dragon fruit production technology was briefed in detail and demonstration of dragon fruit at iron pillars in the community hall of Hut Bay was done for the benefit of Nicobari community.
Seeds of various vegetable crops like leafy vegetables, fruit vegetables, cucurbits, papaya, marigold were distributed to all the participants. Nursery beds were prepared and the seeds were sown on a participatory mode and the trainees were advised to plant the seedlings in their homestead garden at appropriate seedling sage. Planting material of dragon fruit were also distributed to the trainees for planting in their farms. The entire programme was organized and conducted under the chairmanship of Dr. Augustine B. Jerard, Director, ICAR-CIARI.
