Lt. Governor, A & N Islands graces ‘At Home’ Ceremony of A & N Police on the Occasion of Police Week

Port Blair, Jan 22: As a part of celebration of Police Week, “At Home” function (reception) was hosted by Andaman & Nicobar Police on 22nd January, 2020 at Police Lines, Port Blair. Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Admiral Devendra Kumar Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM, (Retd.), graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.  He was accompanied by First Lady of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Smt.Chitra Joshi. Shri Dependra Pathak, IPS, Director General of Police, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Smti.Geeta Pathak, President, Police Family Welfare Centre, Shri Tarun Coomar, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Andaman & Nicobar Islands,  Shri Vikram Dev Dutt, IAS, Principal Secretary (Finance), Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Shri D.M.Shukla, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wild Life), Major General Beji Mathews, Chief of Staff, Andaman  & Nicobar Command,  Shri Sanjay Kumar, IPS, Inspector General of Police (ACU), IG Maneesh Vishal Pathak, TM, Commander, Coast Guard and other senior officers from A&N Administration, Forest department, Police, Armed Force, Members of Electronic & Print media were also an important part of the ceremony.

Every year 16th January, is celebrated as “Raising Day” of Andaman & Nicobar Police and the week following is celebrated as Police Week.                The history of A&N Police dates back to the year 1875, when an organized police force was established in Andaman & Nicobar Islands. In order to deal with crime and criminals, in the year 1924, the Civil Police Force was formed as a separate branch under the control of a Commandant. After independence, it was on 16th January, 1953, that Mr.  Naushirwan Feroz Sauntook, the first IPS officer took over the charge of the Superintendent of Police from Shri M. Macfarland. Hence, this day is celebrated as the “Raising Day” of the Andaman & Nicobar Police.

This year also, Andaman & Nicobar Police is celebrating ‘Police Week’ with great enthusiasm and pride from 16th – 23rd January, 2020 by organizing various programmes and activities to improve Public Police Interface such as awareness drives on social and contemporary issues in schools, colleges & residential areas, cultural-cum-interaction programmes involving public & police families, visit of school children to Police Stations, Jan sambark & Citizen Committee meetings, nukkar-natak and performances by Police Entertainment Team & Police Band etc. These are also in furtherance of #New Andamans initiatives.  Andaman & Nicobar Police is committed to serve the society with dedication and sincerity to provide safe & secure environment to people of these Islands.
