Symposium-Cum-Poets’ Meet Held at Port Blair

Port Blair, Sept 29: The Kolkata Regional Office of Sahitya Akademi in association with the Directorate of Art & Culture, Andaman & Nicobar Administration organised a “Symposium-cum-Poets’ Meet” (Bengali) on 28th September 2019 in the premises of Andaman Club, Port Blair, the inaugural session of which was chaired by Dr. Utpal Kumar Sar, Director of Fisheries, A&N Administration.  Dr. Subodh Sarkar, Chairman, Bengali Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi and Mr. Shyamalkanti Das, Kolkata-based eminent Bengali poet were also present on the occasion.

Dr. Utpal Kumar Sar in his speech said that the writers/litterateurs are the watchmen of the society. But, now-a-days it is very often seen that this intellectual segment of the society are not raising their voices upto that extent which is expected of them.  For one reason or the other, the writers are now taking safe corner and have however forgotten to protest against the ill-practices of the society.  He urged that the writers should be more cautious to their role.

Dr. Subodh Sarkar, famous Bengali poet as well as the Chairman, Bengali Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi said that the UT of Andaman & Nicobar Islands is not very far from the mainstream inasmuch as our planet Earth is now treated as a ‘global village’.  So there should be no division in the names of ‘mainland’ and ‘Island’.  Sahitya Akademi is committed to develop literature of all the languages spoken in Andaman & Nicobar Islands alongwith Bengali.

Mr. Anadiranjan Biswas, General Council-Member as well as the Bengali Advisory Board-Member, Sahitya Akademi, while delivering his key-note address, expressed his views that ‘literature’ is not given proper importance in these Islands in comparison to the other segments of ‘culture’ like sports, drawing-painting, song, drama, dance etc..  He expressed his sincere gratitude to the Andaman & Nicobar Administration for extending its helping hand to organise the Symposium-cum-Poets Meet.

The Festival Issue-2019 of Baakprotima (the only RNI-registered Bengali quarterly little magazine of A&N Islands), 160th in series, edited by Mr. Anadiranjan Biswas was released on this occasion by Dr. Subodh Sarkar and Mr. Shyamalkanti Das jointly.
