Port Blair, Feb 03: It is to bring to the notice of all general public that First Shaheed A.R Jophet cycling championship is being organised by the Nicobar police under the “YUVA” initiative of Andaman &Nicobar Police. Nicobar District Police is organizing this event in memory of former Constable of CRPF who did the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty and laid down his life in Manipur in 1987. He belonged to Sawai village, Car Nicobar and is remembered by the villagers in a very good spirit.
This cycling event is being organized with an aim to promote “Fit India” and “Khelo India” campaign of Govt. of India.
Cycling, being a popular sport in Nicobar has big names at global and national level- EsowAlben, Deborah Herold, David Beckham, others. The cycling has dual aims of not only inculcating a healthy lifestyle but also to promote women empowerment and their rights as many women athletes from the island are already into cycling.
