ICAR- CIARI conducted training on Hi tech tuber crops production under Tuhet system at Kamorta Islands

Port Blair, Feb 03:  The ICAR- Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair has been always in the forefront of implementing reach out of agricultural production technologies to tribal population of Andaman and Nicobar Islands under the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP).  ICAR- CIARI, Port Blair has devised and implemented training cum agricultural implements distribution program proposed by Dr. V. Damodaran under All India Coordinated Research Programme on Tuber crops-TSP at Bada Enakka Village of Nancowrie under the guidance of Dr. B. Augustine Jerard, Director, CIARI.  CIARI, Port Blair has been popularizing cultivation of tuber crops along with coconut as a sustainable livelihood option for the tribal populace.  For improving the productivity of tuber crops and augmenting the agro biodiversity of tuber, five promising Greater Yam (Nicobari Aloo) and assorted seed packets of ten vegetables along with agricultural implements like Talwar, Spade, Hand fork, Pick axe and Dao were distributed to tribal farmers. The program was attended by over 25 farmers under the leadership of second captain Mr. Uman Sari. Dr. I. Jaisankar, Senior Scientist from CIARI and visiting Scientists from ICAR- NBPGR and ICAR- IISR handled the technical sessions on Hi tech tuber crops and vegetable cultivation. Field staff at Kamorta Mr. Ganesan and Mr. Ranjan under the guidance of Mr. Ramesh Kumar ADA, Campbell Bay ensured all logistic support from the Agriculture department, A&N Administration.
